Melody suggested that I post about my affection for a specific genre of movies. These movies are usually 5-6 hour series made by the BBC or Masterpiece Theatre.
It’s amazing to me that I enjoy these films because there are a couple things that seem to repeat:
-There is always some dance where the girl dances with the dude she doesn’t really like, but should like.
-There are always two main problems to overcome: pride and prejudice
-Always some guy in the army
-It is always so exciting to take a coach to London
-Someone has the hots for their cousin
-There has to be at least 3 marriage proposals, preferably to the same woman
-Oh, only if she knew, only if he knew
-He makes 20,000 pounds a year!
My favorite films are the Dickens’ stories as the pride and prejudice is only a sub-theme and there is always a murder mystery. If I would recommend these films to any of you ladies that want to get your husbands into these kinds of films.
Our Mutual Friend
Martin Chuzzle-ma-nuzzle-wit
Bleak House
Nicholas Nickleby
Once you have their attention, try pulling out a few of these:
North and South (let him think it is the civil war one)
Pride and Prejudice (BBC version)
Wives and Daughters
Emma
Persuasion
Wuthering Heights
Adam Bede
Sense and Sensibility (new BBC version)

Capital indeed! And while we are on the subject, does anyone have other favorites in this genre? We could use some good entertainment after watching "The Wizard" this week. (Yes, the 80s movie about nintendo. Jonny's has a wide and varied taste in movies.)
Oh my! I laughed my guts out at this post. It's AWESOME! I have not seen each and all of them. I will have to check them out AND force Jake to watch them! He has watched BOTH versions of P&P though. What a man.
Thanks for the suggestions, I printed out the list and will watch all of them, if you can think of any more, feel free to share!
A very agreeable post indeed. Though it vexes me that more men are not of your very humble opinion. I do hope that others may take you as a notable example.
(Not that KC is opposed to watching these with me, I just wanted to us "vexes".)
way to man up jonny! that is true love right there...I am still working on scott, I will have to share this post with him.
I love that you posted this Jonny (Melody)! I'm still not sure I could ever get Shane to sit down and watch any of them - I have a hard enough time to watch anything I want to watch. We have season 3 of the office now if you need to watch it. We watched 3 episodes last night - I'm still not convinced that it is funny!
I love Bleak House! I'll have to see if the rest of these are at the library so that I can have Mitch watch them with me.
Since you seem to like a lot of shows from BBC you guys should also check out a few other mysteries that Mitch and I have gotten into: we love Cadfael and we also really like Inspector Morse. I think you guys would like Jeeves and Wooster too!
A couple of weeks ago I walked into the living room and James was watching the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, by himself. Maybe you two can watch it together in October while Melody and I work on cars. Just kidding.
Nice work Jonny. Guys can like these movies too. The BBC Pride & Prejudice is still among my top 10 favorite movies, and I LOVE Emma (Gwyneth... *dies*).
The only thing is they don't usually "make" 20,000 a year, they "get" 20,000 a year. It seems like in those movies they rarely actually ever work, they just get inheritance money. What a life.
I could die to go to Bath!
yeah, i kinda like 'em now.
I love all of the BBC films-Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. I'm glad to see that a guy likes them too, maybe there is hope for my husband!
That is a very inclusive list. Several of those I have been meaning to watch for some time now. Thank you for the reminder!
