WANTED: Road Trip Advice

We are excited to be leaving for Colorado on Thursday to visit Jonny's family. We are not so excited, however, to chauffeur our normally-delightful-but-very-antsy-on-extended-car-trips Julia on the three legs of our trip: 7-8 hours to Salida (visit Grandpa Gene), 3 hours to Durango, and then 5-6 hours home. I have a few ideas that I want to try out, such as bringing a portable DVD player and even introducing the lollipop (yikes?). Any more ideas to help Julia make the journey? Oh, and any ideas about not-too-messy car snacks and portable meals? Thanks for the help. I think we'll need it!

I can't wait to hear what you come up with so we can use it on our trip. :-) Along with the $1 books I've been collecting and hiding, I've also been holding some of Kristen's old toys hostage for a couple months so I can 're-introduce' them. I was thinking of maybe wrapping them up along with a few cheapo new ones so she could unwrap them on the way and hoping that might kill a little time. Good luck! Hope you have a great trip.

Let me tell you what I LOVE about road trips . . . oh wait . ..

Good luck. I don't know. I just don't know. I always buy new toys--try dollar store types--and keep them until the brink of a meltdown. Strategically handing out treats is good too. Yes to the DVD player and hit the library for new books.

I checked out lots of board books from the library so they would all be new. Craisins were a nice alternative to the 4 gallons of cheerios Alena ate. The occasional carrot stick also kept her busy for quite a while due to her current tooth shortage. However, my best advice is to have her be sick and need to sleep all day. That was my biggest success.

No advice here, except bring her favorite aunt along to keep her happy. That should do it.

The hike looks so great and shady. And I love the pictures. I don't know which one took which pictures, but I'd say either would do based on what I saw.

Let her read Harry Potter, that always keeps me busy on road trips.

Try renting one of Amber's kids for the trip. They will keep her busy the whole time.

we just did a LONG car trip so I think I have a little advice. THe DVD player, a must. new toys and books is a great idea. as far as snacks go dum-dum suckers are good because they are small and don't leave color all over their faces. Jackson loved licorice too. I know they aren't that healthy but Jack also liked the bread stick and cheese handi-snacks.

oh-in the pringles aisle at the grocery store you can find new "pringles sticks" they come in a box with 10 individual packages. They aren't chips, but 6 inch long, skinny crackers. They best ones are honey butter and vanilla.

She might be a little young for this, but jack had fun with a small cookie sheet that had magnets on it. You might have to clean up all the magnets off the floor when she is done but it will probably buy you 20-30 minutes!

good luck, let us know how it goes!
