a perpetual summer...please?

I have always lived in Utah. As a kid I was so appreciative of every season. I could never choose a favorite because they all had so much to offer. As a mom, I wonder why in the world we live in a place that is cold almost half of the year. Now that I don't build snow forts, go sledding, or ski every weekend, what does winter have to offer me besides dangerous driving conditions and having to bundle up my kids every single time we step out the door? Yes, I think I am one of those people who wishes for a two month autumn, a cozy, white December - and then straight on to spring. January 1st! (I do love the fall and spring. I guess it's only winter that is ridiculous.) Okay, maybe I'd miss the snow a little. Actually, no, I think I would be fine. Toddlers cooped up day after day. Winter. Blah.

I didn't mean for this to be a Utah/winter-bashing post. (Surely Drew will put his seasonal opinions in a comment. Sorry Drew, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!) I love Utah, I really do. And I would miss the mountains terribly if we moved. I would miss the excitement and festive moods that the change in seasons bring. I guess I am just dreading the inevitable winter because I am so so so loving these nice summer days. Every single day I am thankful for a fenced in yard that keeps my kids happy and contained. A few days a week our backyard look like this:

Neighborhood kids come over and we party in the water. What is better than that?

Here Gabe is saying, "Coooold!"
And this is where the life guard sits, sipping lemonade and reading a magazine. Ha. In my dreams. As soon as I sit down I get right back up to break up fights over water toys or fix the slip-n-slide. Still, better than bundling kids up in layers of clothes so they can play in the snow for a few minutes. Ah, summer. I will enjoy you while you last!

HA, I already had my comment formulating before you gave the shout-out to me! Yes, I do love the winter, and yes, I do very much dislike the summer, (Just today I was thinking how horribly sweaty and hot I was and how our apartment is usually hotter than it is outside even with the "air conditioning" on, and how it seems like everywhere I go is sweltering), though The Wife is helping me to be a little less Negative Nancy about it all--it really does just make it longer to complain about it.

I do love a spring and fall though, but I guess the point of this comment is that I think I must live somewhere that has four seasons, even with the allergies and heat and sweat and sun that comes with summer, if that means I get a nice cold winter. :D

You already know my opinions on the Utah situation. Way better than the AZ situation. Someday I will be back for good, and there will be a chair next to you with me lounging in it!

drew you would love our wyoming weather! and not just anywhere in wyoming just where I live. We really only have maybe 3 months of summer and it never gets above 80. we dont even have to have air conditioners here. We have spring and fall that are nice but only for a few months. Winter is the main season here. and yes at times it can be very bitterly cold. but other than that it isnt any worse than utah. well besides the wind that can be awful sometimes but at other is is very cool. aslo, we have no polution! our air is so clean and I think our allergy season is much less than utah! needless to say... utah is way too hot in the summer for me anymore. and I dont like the air or how many people are there! I LOVE wyoming! :)

I am with you on the winter. I mean, I never loved the cold weather, but having kids made it even worse for me. Especially last winter when the kids would immediately take off their shoes and socks within a few minutes of me putting them on. And them getting sick all the time. But I am not that sold on summer either, at least with this many kids at this age in this climate. I am so jealous of your backyard I could cry. My plan for the future is to move somewhere with hardly any cold days/year, and with a fenced in back yard. Come with me!

I think I will love summer more when I have a yard. I am feeling like a bad mom because I don't want to lug my stroller down the stairs, walk 10 minutes to a decent park, lather on sunscreen, pack water and band-aids in 95 degree weather with 80% humidity. Then having to turn around after 45 minutes at the park because its nap time.
If only we had a closer place to play, I think I would love it too.

Looks like you guys are the party yard! I'm with you on the summer business, but I'm interested to see if I'll be ok with summer being over over if I don't have preschool...

Yes, wouldn't it be SO nice to NOT have to break up the fights? That backyard is kid heaven. I need all those water accoutrements!

I must say that I love winter, until Christmas is over, then I'm so ready for spring! I'm so a fall and spring person, and I do like summer, though it tends to get a little too hot sometimes. Not this year though! I feel like this year has been a perfect summer!
